Batavia's Energy

Batavia is powered by electricity supplied by the city’s public works department and natural gas supplied by Nicor Gas.  Since we buy and distribute our own electricity, we know more about it:
    Batavia's Electricity Sources
    How much Batavians consume
    Electricity's Environmental Impact
We think this is important.

If we could understand our energy -- how much we use and it's impact --  then maybe also we would understand its real cost: money, mining and slurry, water needs and habitat destruction, emissions and asthma, etc.   With this knowledge, we can find motivation and strength for change.

There are many resources out there to help us make the connection between leaving on the lights and the mercury warnings on our tuna fish cans.   Here is one:

Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America by Jeff Barrie
In this DVD, we see exactly what happens when we turn on the switch.  Jeff Barrie shows what you would find if you traced the wires from your light switch all the way back to the energy source in the southeastern United States.  Then he demonstrates how he cut his energy load in half.  BCEC owns this video.  You can borrow it.  Just ask.  Betsy@BCECHOME.org
