There has been a steady increase in electricity consumption even if we factor out the weather and increase in population.  This is a national and regional trend.  ComEd has seen a yearly increase in residential electric energy consumption just under 2%.  ComEd attributes this growth to the following:

  • An increase in the number and size of kitchen appliances, TVs and stereo systems and gaming electronics.
  • Increase in the average size of housing units.
  • Home improvements which include additional lighting fixtures.

That's probably true in Batavia too.  But here is the surprise.  The average Batavia resident consumes more than the average local Illinois resident.  In general, customers of municipal utilities consume more than customers of ComEd or Ameron.  In 2005, we consumed 18% more.  That's a lot.  It might be because our electricity is cheaper so it doesn't seem so precious.

Electricity is precious.  It takes a lot to generate and transport it to our homes.  It's worth conserving.

You can determine your own residential electric consumption by following your electric bills.  The bills show how many kilowatt hours were used during the billing cycle.  If you divide the kilowatt hours by the number of days, you will get your average number of kilowatt hours per day.  If you live in the City of Batavia and want your electric usage history, call the billing department 630-879-1424.  They will send it to you.
