Compost

Composting

  • reduces landfill waste,
  • improves your soil,
  • is free and doesn't require yard waste bags.

There are many ways to do it, but really, you don't do much.  The worms and bacteria do it.  Your job is to wait.  You will have a compost pile even if all you do is take your kitchen vegetable scraps, fall leaves and grass clippings and pile them is a small corner of your yard.  No meat, bones or oily items.  In time, you will have compost.

The University of Illinois Extension Office has a site that answers all your questions but don't be alarmed by the amount of information.  Remember, compost happens.  It just does.
