This free program aimed at reducing peak eletricity is a great simple step in energy conservation.
- It will save you a little money.
- It will save our city money.
- It is good for the environment.
Peak refers to the moments when we as group collectively use the most electricity. To some extent this happen every day when we come home from work, turn on the lights, do chores and begin to make dinner. Each day there is a peak. But in the summer, the peaks skyrocket. Not when it is hottest in Batavia, but when it is hottest throughout our electric grid which extends to the east coast.
Our goal is to shave off the peak by just 1% on the five highest days of the summer. This is time when every power plant is running full capacity. This is the time when electricity is pumping all over grid. This is the time to Power Down.
Collectively, as a group, we can make this difference.
It is voluntary program that costs nothing.
- Sign-up with your email address.
- During the summer, you will receive about 10-15 notifications that a peak time is expected. Typically you will be notified at about 3 pm asking you to reduce energy usage on the following day from 3 pm – 6 pm.
- According to your family needs, prepare to reduce electric consumption.
Before you leave the house on the peak day, be sure to turn off all computers, lights, chargers, etc. Either turn off the A/C or turn up the thermostat by 5 degrees. When you come home that day, hold off chores and dinner until after 6 pm.
This is a small step that can make a big difference.
And please encourage your friends and family to participate also. This is a Batavia initiative. This is our savings, our electricity, our community. True success will come with many hands. So please, if you are willing to pass on information to others or speak to the groups you are involved with, please email Betsy Zinser at Betsy@BCEChome.org.
