Shop Locally -- Green Businesses

When it is time to shop, remember to support our local merchants, farmers and artisans.  This website has information on many pages about where to buy green products -- cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, food, and gently used items.  Below you will find some additional sources.  They are listed alphabetically by business name.  Of course, some of the businesses are more green than others.  It is your job to decide.

Ken Gortowski

Ken is an amateur photographer and nature enthusiast. After 12 years of fishing and hunting throughout the Fox River Valley, he has taken the most beautiful pictures of our natural home and compiled his favorite photographs into a 2009 calendar.  He offers the calendar through Cafepress.com with a portion of the profits benefitting Batavians for a Healthy River and Friends of the Fox.

He writes of the Fox River:
“From the narrow tributaries that flow into it, to the thick woods lining it, to the expansive farm fields surrounding it, I continuously find new surroundings that leave me in awe.  Sometimes I get lucky and the pictures I take actually look interesting.  Since I wander the Fox Valley year round, I have images from all months.  Hopefully you'll find something interesting in them too.

The Fox River and its valley have given me countless hours of pleasure, but I also believe in giving back. So ONE dollar from every item sold from the Fox Valley collection of items will be donated to groups diligently working to preserve and protect the natural resources of the Fox River and its valley.

I hope you enjoy the images I've collected and presented. And I hope you come to appreciate what is sometimes within a few feet of where you live.”

Prairie Path Cycles

Yes, it’s a bike store.  I love this store and I have no need for another bike.

This summer I bought a detachable bike basket to carry produce home from the farmer's market.  Now I look like the wicked witch from the west.  They put it on my bike for free while I shopped downtown.  They also have an enormous selection of helmets.  The owner taught me how to properly size and wear it.   They have all kinds of gadgets and good maps of the trails in our area.  Some maps are free.

Wooden Toys & Silks

Dianne Peterson offers a very large selection of plastic-free, imagination-inspiring, safe toys and silks.  Her inventory includes play silks, baby toys, games, puppets, wooden figures, kids’ jewelry, play food, dolls, architectural building blocks, castles, modeling beeswax, puzzles, portable fairy houses, Klean Kanteen water bottles and more.  I have seen the selection.  Most of the toys are wooden or fabric.  They are beautiful – worthy of keeping and passing on to children and grandchildren.  These are truly special items.  Dianne sells from her home.
